I just purchased a john deere 1050 4wd tractor with a 75 loader. It has a whine in the trans. Has anybody else had a problem like this. I paid 4000 for the tractor with some various attachments. I don't know much about the tractor. Can anybody help me. thankyou

Does it whine in all gears? Hi or Low range, or both? A certain amount of gear noise, especially in the lower gears, is normal. How many hours does the tractor have on it? ....

thank for responding. It whines in all gears. The higher the gear the louder the whine. It has 2700hrs. Sounds like it is in the lower part of the tranny. I tried shifting into 4wd and hi and low range it is still there. It only makes the noise when tractor is moving, more so when under power or using engine to slow down tractor. I really thankyou for your help.

If it's in ALL gears, most likely problem is either in the differential/final drive gearsets or the input shaft bearing. I'd say your next step, if you're really worried about it, would be to take it to a JD mechanic and get an opinion. Seeing as (as far as I know, anyway) the 1050 uses the transmission/hydraulic system which uses the transmission as a sump for the hydraulic system, you can't go to a heavier lubricant, and you'd want to check VERY carefully before using any additives.
If you haven't already, you might consider draining the trans (there's probably more than one plug, make sure you get them all) and pulling and cleaning the filter screen. When you do that, drain into a clean pan and check for metal in the oil. A little fine powder or some "color" in the bottom of the pan is normal. Chunks are a bad sign... ....

If there's little experience with tractors and no way to compare it with another tractor in good working order, an expert 'go through' may sort out a bunch of stuff and help with ease of mind. The problem is that some transmissions do whine, and without experience or a comparison, there's no good way to tell normal from abnormal noise. I've had warnings that bearings were failing that I'd describe as a 'squeak' and others as a 'grinding.' I'm not sure I associate a whine with bearing failures, but could be. Too bad sound isn’t easy on Internet, but then I’d be heard whining about the heat and lack of rain. Most dealers have travelling mechanics. They come to your place, but you pay for travel time. Many dealers try to discourage travelling mechanic jobs for broken tractors. Usually the exact parts and tools needed aren't known beforehand, and the mechanic may have to make trips back to the shop for parts and tools. Travel time charges mount up. For a job like a general check through, it might be less expensive to get the mechanic to the tractor rather than the other way around. ....

Troy, it sounds like you got the deal of the year! You could double your investment in that tractor and still come out ahead. As for the noise, I can't tell you what it is from here, and it doesn't sound typical of the 1050s. But most old mechanics should be able to help you out. That transmission is a very simple and straightforward spur gear type all the way to the final drive. The next size up had a planetary final drive, but the 1050 does not. Check all your oils, and if that isn't it, I'd go the expense of fixing it. Right now it is more likely to be a bearing than a gear. ....
